A one-day Discussion program on Environment and Climate Change organized in Kathmandu on 5 June to mark Work Environment Day. The theme of the World Environment Day 2010 is “Many Species, One Planet One Future”.
The alliance of 5 organization – JCYC Nepal, Youth Coordination Center, Volunteer Aid Nepal, HRELIC Nepal and Mission Nepal together celebrated world environment day by organizing one day discussion program as one of the functions to mark world environment day 2010.
The glaciers and snowline in the Himalayan system are rapidly melting and retreating. People have already experienced a wide range of difficulties resulted from impacts of global warming.
The alliance of 5 Organization promoted awareness through discussion program among the youths on climate change – a result of global warming, its impacts and their responsibilities to the issues.
The main objective of discussion program was to raise awareness among youth people on climate change and start to talking to address the issues arising from climate change. More over 50 participants representing academic institutions, NGOs, Media, CBO and child clubs, participated the program in Lalitpur.
Science of global warming, climate change and its impacts on biodiversity, water resources, human health, linkages to the increasing disasters as observed and experienced on the livelihoods of the communities were shared. Similarly, adaptations and responses by the communities and government strategies and actions for climate change were discussed and summarized through different presentations and interactions among the participants.
Surya Gaire from Youth Coordination Center and Pradip Batyal from Kantipur National Daily presented paper on the issue of Environment and Climate Change. Similarly, Bhuvan Poudel from Volunteer Aid Nepal readout environmental poem.
Chief Guest of this program, Constitute Assembly member Roshan Gaha Thapa said “all the environmental policy must be implemented to save environment “. Thapa added ahead new Constitution have to give authorities to local bodies to conserve environment. President of Mission Nepal also suggested to all participants to take action to conserve environment through personal effort. All people participated on this program committed to do small things as they can to conserve environment. Some of them committed to plant a flower/ indoor tree in their houses. Commitment from all participants to save environment was really appreciated and made it program meaningful.
Bidhya Sagar Pandey from Youth Coordination Center, Tilottam Paudel from JCYC Nepal and Ramesh Timilsina from HRELIC highlighted the need of field based collaborative actions as well as national and sectoral plans and policies to cope with the adverse impacts of climate change.
The alliance of 5 organization also decided to unite to take action for upcomming days.
June 5 is the World Environment Day celebrated each year to make global communities aware on the pertinent environmental issues. The day reminds global communities to review pregress, attitudes and actions to address the environmental issues.
